Bhid\u00e9, Professor of Health Policy at Columbia University Medical Center<\/a> (Mailman School of Public Health) and Thomas Schmidheiny Professor of Business Emeritus<\/em> at Tufts University<\/a> (Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy), has researched and taught about innovation, entrepreneurship, and finance since 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a founding editor of Capitalism and Society<\/em>, Bhid\u00e9 is the author of Uncertainty and Enterprise: Venturing Beyond the Known<\/em> (Oxford 2025). His earlier books include A Call for Judgment: Sensible Finance for a Dynamic Economy<\/em> (Oxford, 2010), The Venturesome Economy: How Innovation Sustains Prosperity in a More Connected World<\/em> (Princeton, 2008), The Origin and Evolution of New Businesses<\/em> (Oxford, 2000) and Of Politics and Economic Reality<\/em> (Basic Books, 1984).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Starting in the early 1980s, he has written numerous articles for the Harvard Business Review<\/em>, the Wall Street Journal<\/em>, the New York Times<\/em>, the Financial Times<\/em>, Project Syndicate, and Barron’s<\/em>. He has periodically appeared on Bloomberg TV and CNBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bhid\u00e9 was the Lawrence Glaubinger Professor of Business at Columbia University (from 2000 to 2009) and the Thomas Schmidheiny Professor of Business at Tufts University (from 2010 to 2023). He also served on the business school faculties of Harvard and Chicago universities. During his most recent Harvard appointment (as HBS Visiting Professor, 2020-21), Bhid\u00e9 created and taught an elective course, \u2018Lessons from Transformational Medical Advances.\u2019 The course drew on his research on the nature and development of productive knowledge.<\/a> Bhid\u00e9\u2019s current assignment at Columbia is to teach, develop, and disseminate the course on transformational innovations (including to fields outside medicine).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n His recent business experience includes directorship of an FTSE 100 company. In the 1980s, Bhid\u00e9 was a Senior Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, a Proprietary Trader at E.F. Hutton, and served on the Brady Commission staff, investigating the 1987 stock market crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bhid\u00e9 earned a DBA and MBA from Harvard Business School with High Distinction (Baker Scholar) and a B.
